Top 5 Denim You Should Own Right Now – Regina Due

Love it or hate it, denim is not going anywhere. Whether you are off for a day of lectures or a lazy day of shopping; date night, drinks with the girls or even work sometimes, denim is the go-to piece that will serve the occasion.

As with our classic white T-shirts and knitwear, denim is a staple in our wardrobe that will serve us for years to come. These days, the fashion world is giving the denim obsessed more reasons to rejoice with denim pieces that go beyond the usual bootleg jeans.

So what are the top pieces every denim lover should invest in? Well, the following is a list of the top five denim pieces to get your hands on!

The playsuit

The playsuit is for the fun-loving, easy going fashionistas and this season, more than just coming in floral patterns or silk materials, we are seeing street style stars wearing playsuits in denim material. Perfect to pair with white sneakers and a messy bun, a denim playsuit is a great alternative to the shorts and T-shirt combo.

The short shorts

If you love your short shorts, then don’t change your style formula. Denim shorts have been around for years and they are not going anywhere. Whether paired with a sleek tank top and converse sneakers or worn with a statement blouse and pretty ballet pumps, these short shorts will take you anywhere from the beach to the bar.

The skinny jean

Studies have shown the damage skinny jeans may cause to our health but that hasn’t stopped most women from wearing skinny jeans during winter and summer. Find the silhouette that accentuates your body shape. You can play with colored denim here or even go for a skinny jean that is torn on the thighs and knees for an edgy touch to your everyday look.

The jacket

For a while there, the denim jacket was given a back seat but this season, denim jackets are back again and being worn with everything from luxury gowns to leggings; tight midi dresses and long maxi skirts. Perfect for those chilly summer nights, the denim jacket in a classic blue hue or in a summer white is a great piece to work in your everyday style and the best part of this is that the older the jacket is, the better it looks.

The boyfriend jean

When it’s loose fitting, casual cool that you are going for, then the boyfriend jean is the denim piece you have to get your hands on. The antithesis of the skinny jeans, the boyfriend jean is comfortable in that it gives your legs room to breathe. The boyfriend jean can be worn with sneakers and an elegant tank top for a super casual look or it can be given a chic twist when worn with a great pair of statement heels and a silk lace camisole.

These are the top five denim pieces you should own right now. Which one can’t you wait to get your hands on? Share your thoughts below!

Fashion | ‘Furs’ the In-Thing this Winter

‘Furs’ the In-Thing this Winter

Furs are the “in thing” this winter and you can see a lot of jackets, coats, ponchos, sweatshirts and hoodies. Many designer brands like Debenhams, Marks and Spencer, Mango and so many other brands are showcasing furs in different styles.
But, before we go into further discussion, let’s see why furs are so in and trendy in the winter 2016.
Although furs were never technically “out of fashion,” but, in the recent years, it can be seen a lot more than usual. So, what is it now that makes furs more chic and trendy for the youngsters at present?
The furs that are now available are more wide in variety. They are accessible in more outline, colors and different pattern, which make it a stylish commodity for youngsters. In short, the furs in the market now cannot be by any means described as the “Grand Ma’s fur.”

Fashion News | US streetwear label Public School makes debut in Dubai

US streetwear label Public School makes debut in Dubai

New York-based luxe streetwear label Public School chose Dubai for its first international runway show last week.
The Dubai Design District was the venue for the duo behind the brand, Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne, to showcase their pre-fall collection which will be rolled out globally next year.
The show took place in front of a host of industry folks from the UAE and their US counterparts, and was held in partnership with Cadillac on the eve of the Dubai Motor Show.
The car maker, which continues to increase its engagement with the fashion community by supporting new and established designers, also unveiled their luxury crossover model XT5 during the event.
Speaking of Public School’s ongoing partnership with the automobile company, Chow says: “When you think of American luxury, you think Cadillac. For us it’s such a strong brand in our lives, everything about it felt really natural. It’s been a natural, familiar progression.”
The designer also revealed why staging the show in Dubai was a must, given the synergies he felt between the city and his brand’s DNA.
“It matches up really well: the contrast between technology and nature, where one ends and the other begins,” he says. “When you think about Dubai, it’s this huge city that’s dropped into a desert. It’s a great example of our concept of how those two slash into one another. A weird mash-up that turned out to be the perfect backdrop for the show.”
Of the collection itself, pieces flitted from charcoal black, pewter and plum to mocha, silver and cream. Luxe streetwear silhouettes for women included satin-trimmed bomber jackets, unstructured trousers and sheer-panel knits.
Monochrome column dresses made an appearance, as did mesh numbers with extra-long sleeves.
The collection was equally wearable for chaps, with Public School’s clean lines, gently tailored sports jackets and deconstructed houndstooth navy prints proving the standouts.
Layering was the order of the day for men and women, with crisp white collars peaking out of kaftan-like tunics and side- tying kimono jackets.
Female models exhibited barely-there make-up of rosebud lips and a flick of mascara, while their hair was slicked down in a low ponytail.
On the accessories front, elasticated boots, chunky-soled shoes and trainers punctuated the collection alongside oversized backpacks in black and white. “We’ve always tried to mix the ideas of high and low, luxury and street, everything that NY is, all in one,” says Osborne. “For example, you can be on a train in NYC and stand next to a billionaire and a homeless person. That’s what Public School is – in the proportions of fabric, the pricing, the layering – everything is about that global citizen.”

Fashion News | UAE leads design market growth in Middle East and North Africa region

The UAE is the largest design market in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region, with a 27 per cent share and $27.6 billion in revenues in 2014, according to Mena Design Outlook 2015 report, released on Monday.
Commissioned by the Dubai Design and Fashion Council and produced by global consultancy Deloitte, the report highlights that the UAE is expected to maintain its position in the coming years, with the country’s design market forecast to reach $35.9 billion by 2019.
Overall in the region, the design market is expected to grow by about 6 per cent annually to reach $147.5 billion by 2019, according to the report. It states that the Mena design market was valued at more than $100 billion last year, representing more than 4.5 per cent of the global design market, at $2.3 trillion. And by 2019, it is forecast to account for 5.2 per cent of the global market.
In 2013, Dubai launched a new project — the Dubai Design District (D3) — aimed at making it the region’s fashion and design hub. The project, which is developed by Tecom Investments, is located adjacent to the Business Bay area. The first phase of the project, with 11 buildings and 10,000 design and creative professionals, is complete.
Meanwhile, the second phase, which includes the “Creative Community”, is expected to be completed by 2018, followed by the third phase in 2019, which will feature the Waterfront Promenade that includes hotels, cafés, restaurants and boutiques.
Commenting on the report, Amina Al Rostamani, Chairperson of Dubai Design and Fashion Council and CEO of Tecom Investments, said: “We recognised that we currently face a lack of visibility on the design markets as well as benchmarking standards … Commissioning a study such as this gives us key insights which will enable us to shape the way forward and helps us identify the gaps in the market and introduce strategic initiatives to support the growth of the design sector.”
Saudi Arabia is the second biggest design market in the region, with revenues of $21.9 billion. Qatar and Egypt follow, both representing around half of the Saudi market.
Design revenues in the region are forecast to grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9-10 per cent in the next three years.
While the UAE is the largest design market in Mena, it is likely to grow at a slower pace compared to other markets in the coming years “due to a higher level of maturity”, according to the report. Saudi Arabia and Qatar are the region’s fastest growing design markets, having grown by 9 and 11 per cent respectively between 2010 and 2013.
Fashion, architecture and interior design are the largest segments of the design industry in Mena, and specifically in the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, as per the report.
The region is among the global emerging markets driving fashion expenditure, alongside Brazil, Russia, India and China.
The Mena fashion market has outpaced global industry growth since 2010, with a CAGR of 15.7 per cent. That compares to a global CAGR of 3.3 per cent. The growth has been driven by increased spending in retail infrastructure in the UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, according to the report.
The UAE leads the region with a 28.3 per cent share of apparel revenues, followed by Saudi Arabia with 16.8 per cent. Globally, the fashion retail market is forecast to exceed $1.7 trillion by 2019.

Fashion News | Qatar sisters The Al Subaeys offer a sneak peek at new nomadic-inspired collection

Qatar sisters The Al Subaeys offer a sneak peek at new nomadic-inspired collection

The Qatar based sisters Ghada, Hend and Maha Al Subaey, have come a long way with their ready-to-wear label The Kayys. Launched in 2011, the brand will show its new, desert-themed spring/summer 2016 collection in a runway presentation today at the Vogue Fashion Dubai Experience.
The Al Subaeys are widely felicitated – they won the Young Designer prize in the 2013 Arab Woman Awards, and also had the unique experience of dressing Gwen Stefani for her performance at the Men’s Handball Tournament in Doha in March.
Their label, which is available at The Luxury Arcade in Abu Dhabi’s World Trade Center Mall, started out as many other fashion projects do: with passion, pizzazz and out-of-the-box styling concepts.
The initial Marie Antoinette-meets-Middle East designs featured plenty of frou frou, volume and bright colours. Since then, their vision has matured, cuts have simplified and styling has become more refined. Today, the sisters are known for producing chic, on-trend designs with an urban edge and minimalist undertones – statement separates that can be layered or worn solo.
The sisters place a lot of importance on detail, and structured silhouettes and intricate hand embroidery have combined to become the brand’s signature aesthetic.
“We are really honoured and excited to be part of Vogue Italia,” says Ghada ahead of their big runway show in Dubai. “We’re looking forward to a great experience – we have so much to share with everyone.” Explaining their spring/summer line, Ghada says their work was inspired by a stormy desert landscape: “Abstract lines and curves reflect the mineral formations that take place on the sand dunes, and the writings integrated resemble the desert romance, poems and songs.”
Expect a soft, earthy palette of beiges, light browns and greens, in nomadic cuts such as hooded kaftans, trench dresses and bomber-inspired jackets. Textiles will include lurex wools and organic linens, cottons and silks. The new collection also draws heavily on verses by the poet Rumi, and Arabic calligraphy will be incorporated into embroidery on the garments. The sisters are no strangers to using script in their designs. Their autumn/winter 2015 show emphasised the word “numinous”, which, coupled with Arabic text, was placed on a white sheet of fabric and tacked onto the front of a grey dress and the back of a green bomber jacket.
“Numinous means having a strong religious or spiritual quality, indicating the presence of a divinity. It is a beautiful word that has several connotations and meanings on whatever you look at in life,” says Ghada, adding that if the brand achieves international fame for a particular style, it would be one that “embraces a woman’s inner worldly spirit and natural elegance”.

Fashion News | UAE design business forecast to be worth $36 billion in four years

UAE design business forecast to be worth $36 billion in four years
Amina Al Rustamani, chairman of the Dubai Design and Fashion Council, said the design market’s contribution to the Emirate’s GDP is among the highest in the region. Antonie Robertson / The National

The design business in the UAE is forecast to be worth nearly US$36 billion within the next four years, according to a year-long review of the sector commissioned by Amina Al Rustamani, the chief executive of the Tecom Group of business parks and chairwoman of the Dubai Design and Fashion Council (DDFC).
The financial potential of the sector will be unveiled in Dubai tomorrow in the DDFC’s Mena Design Outlook report, as part of the strategy aiming to make Dubai a design hub rivalling London, Paris, and Milan, but also taking on the communications design hubs of San Francisco and Seattle.
“This outlook report is part of our ambitious vision to become a capital of design at a global level, showcasing regional talent and driving the innovation-led economy,” Ms Al Rustamani said. “We are proud to report that the design market’s contribution to the emirate’s GDP is among the highest in the region.”
The outlook study, undertaken by the global accounting and consulting firm Deloitte & Touche, showed the value of design in the UAE – in communications, fashion, architecture and media – stood at $27.6bn last year, ahead of Saudi Arabia at $21.9bn and Qatar at $11.9bn.
That compares with about $100bn in the Mena region as a whole, and a global value of $2.3 trillion.
High growth rates are forecast for design in the UAE, as well as Saudi, Qatar and Egypt over the next four years.
The biggest elements of the industry in the UAE are fashion, with 74 per cent of the total, followed by architecture and furniture design. Big growth rates are forecast in lighting, communication and interior design.
Speaking about the 2015 outlook report, Ms Al Rustamani said: “It will ensure a clear strategy and road map for the government and all stakeholders to focus on design as a key part of Dubai and UAE economic development. I want us to rival the rest of the world as a design hub and as a ‘smart city’.
“I will know we have succeeded when I have global designers coming out of Dubai and being recognised as international leaders in the field. The essence of design in Dubai will be a fusion of the Emirate’s cosmopolitanism and the Islamic and Arabic foundations of our culture.”
As the chief executive of Tecom, one of the operating businesses of government-owned Dubai Holding, Ms Al Rustamani has responsibility for the implementation of the Dubai Design District (d3) – a site of 22 million square feet in the city that is in the process of being developed as a multi-use hub for the design industry.
Phase I is complete, with 11 buildings, 500 companies and 10,000 professionals, while phase II – a “creative community” for 6,000 designers – is due for completion in 2017.
“The model has been set by areas like Shoreditch in London and parts of New York, which have developed organically. With space in places such as Karama, Al Quoz and Satwa too limited, Dubai has not had that opportunity, so we have decided to build from scratch. It is very exciting.”
The d3 development is being financed and developed by Tecom, which has made its name building and operating the successful business parks and free zones in Dubai. Ms Al Rustamani said: “D3 will be a normal commercial project for us. Tecom is not a traditional property developer, we have a long-term mandate and key indicators set by the government of Dubai.”
She aims to attract big corporates from the global design industry into d3, which has already pulled in some of the best-known names in regional design and architecture, as well as household names in the luxury goods business.
As a free zone, d3 offers 100 per cent foreign ownership, full repatriation of profit and capital, and exemption for 50 years from personal, income and corporate tax.
It is also a key part of the strategy to foster small and medium enterprises, with 95 per cent of all firms from the SME sector.
The report aims to help meet what have traditionally been regarded as challenges in design in the Mena region – a lack of design institutions, poor enforcement of intellectual property protection and limited willingness to recognise the commercial value of design.

FASHION NEWS | Islamic Fashion Market set to be Worth $327bn by 2020

Islamic fashion market set to be worth $327bn by 2020
The Islamic fashion market is projected to grow by six percent annually to be worth $327 billion by 2020, according to new figures released ahead of a major summit being held in Dubai next month.

n 2014, Islamic, or modest, fashion sector expenditure reached $230 billion, constituting 11 percent of the global fashion market. But the sector will be worth $327 billion by 2020, according to the upcoming State of the Global Islamic Economy report, to be published in conjunction with the Global Islamic Economy Summit taking place in Dubai this October.
The 2015 summit, organised by Dubai Chamber, the Dubai Islamic Economy Development Centre (DIEDC) and Thomson Reuters, is set to gather over 2,000 policymakers, thinkers and business leaders on October 5-6 at Madinat Jumeirah.
Contrary to the rest of the fashion industry, which is facing financial pressures as a result of global recession, it continues to expand. Initially catering to the inherent modesty of the Muslim world, Islamic fashion is generating demand from other regions and cultures where modesty is a priority, as well as attracting attention from major mainstream fashion players.
Initiatives across the GCC region, and especially in Qatar and the UAE, have turned a spotlight onto Islamic art that retains a focus on traditional religious works, while also introducing audiences to more contemporary offerings.
As part of the drive within the GCC to create a more vibrant cultural profile, innovative spaces such the Mathaf in Qatar and the Guggenheim and Louvre in Abu Dhabi, as well as contemporary galleries in Dubai, are all encouraging investment in Islamic art and helping it go mainstream.
Featuring more than 60 international speakers across 15 sessions, the summit will offer comprehensive insights on the seven core pillars within the Islamic economy – Islamic Finance, Halal Industry, Family Tourism, Islamic Knowledge, Islamic Arts and Design, Islamic Digital Economy, and Islamic Standards.

News | ITF Dubai to propel the Middle Eastern Textile Market

International Textile Fair Dubai
Dubai, U.A.E: Getting exhibitors on board is always considered a milestone, but at the International Textile Fair, it is a milestone crossed often. ITF have landed a cluster of prominent exhibitors that force you to sit up and take notice, as much at the meritorious line-up as at the regularity of the announcements. As the fair draws closer, the exhibitors –just like the excitement and anticipation- keeps on increasing.
The ITF will be held in Dubai, but its specter will resonate across the globe. With exhibitors hailing from virtually every continent, the fair has truly become a global phenomenon. Now in its third edition, the fair will once again serve as a crossroads for textile companies and fashion houses from around the world.
For a roster that already includes the crème de la crème of the textile industry, ITF has been relentless in its pursuit of achieving textile versatility; signing a spate of exhibitors from Central Asia (Lebanon, Singapore) to Oriental colonies (Singapore, Hong Kong). ITF received immediate acknowledgement from the textile community not only in Dubai, but across the world; 96 exhibitors from across five continents stand testimony to that. TEXMAS, the textile merchants group that represents 800 Dubai textile traders, have also been vocal in their support of the ITF.
The omnium-gatherum at the fair is, in itself, a sight to behold. One will find exquisite Italian velvet at one stall, and motif laden Turkish satin at the other. Keynote speakers from London, Dubai, and France will be in attendance at ITF, speaking on topics as diverse as sustainability in fashion (reducing environmental impact of the industry), to the emerging swimwear market in the Middle East.
