BABY DUCK TOWEL
Jumbo rickrack water and a cute swimming duck turn a plain white hand towel into the perfect towel for a newborn.
Materials:
- Hand towel
- Scraps of three coordinating fabric (we chose yellow for the duck's head and body, orange for the duck's bill, and a star pattern fabric for the duck's wing)
- Lightweight or sewable fusible web
- Jumbo rickrack
- Embroidery floss
Prepare the Duck:
1. Download the duck pattern below. Cut out the pattern pieces. Cut scraps of fabric to fit each pattern piece.
2. Pin each pattern piece to the right side (patterned side) of fabric scrap. Cut out the pattern pieces. For details on pinning and cutting with patterns, see here.
3. Embellish your pattern pieces as you wish. We used a French knot and blue embroidery floss to give the duck an eye. Get creative! You can add feathers to the wing, a smile to the bill, or even cute tufts of hair! See our directions for different embroidery stitches here.
4. Cut pieces of lightweight fusible web to fit each pattern piece. Pin the pattern piece to the fusible web. When pinning, the paper side of the fusible web should be facing up and the pattern piece should be reversed (or with front side down) on the fusible web. Cut each pattern piece out.
5. Following fusible web instructions, place the fusible web with rough (glue side) down on the wrong side (unpatterned side) of pattern pieces. Press in place.
6. Peel the paper backing off the fused pattern piece. Place the body shape on the towel. Fuse the shape in place following the manufacturer’s directions; let cool. Next, fuse the wing, head, and then the bill in place.
7. Using matching thread, sew around each pattern piece to hold them in place. For tips on sewing curves,see here.
Sew on Rickrack:
1. Pin the rickrack in place.
2. Cut the rickrack so you have an extra inch on both sides. Fold the rickrack under, so it's on the other side of the towel. This will give your towel a nice finish.
3. Sew a stright line through the center of the rickrack using matching thread.
