Hello! My name is Darleen, and I am posting my first craft tutorial here at HowDoesShe! I stay busy over at Darling Darleen creating beautiful things, and with my shop Darleen Meier Jewelry. I’ve recently been obsessed with “all things gold”. I like to blame it on the fact that I’m a jewelry designer, but really I think it’s because gold adds that touch of glitz and glam.
Today I am sharing with you a simple sewing tutorial on how to make a gold sequined word script decorative pillow. Word script prints, t-shirts, and pillows are the trend right now, and I’m going to show you how to make one with a little gold.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- pillow insert
- pillow cover (I made a simple one out of white fabric I had on hand).
- gold sequined ribbon
- scissors
- needle and thread
- graphite paper
- pencil
- print out of a font you would like to use
To begin, you need to decide on one word you would like to use. I went with “love”, but there are other good ones like hope, faith, beach, home, family, happy…to name a few. Go to your computer and type your word in a font you would like to use and adjust the font size so the letters would be large enough to cover your pillow size. My word needed to be printed on two pages, and then I taped them together so the letters would make “love”.
Now take your pillow cover and place the graphite paper down on the cover, and then place the font page on top of the graphite paper. Use your pencil and trace the letters of your word. The graphite paper will transfer the the font style word script onto the pillow cover.
You will see your word lightly written on the pillow cover, and now you are ready to sew on the gold sequins. This is the part that takes a little more time! Thread your needle and take the gold sequin ribbon and begin to hand stitch the ribbon over each letter. I used a straight stitch, and it held each sequins in place. The hole of each sequins was my marker to push my needle through. Once I got it down, it went pretty quickly.
Now you are done and ready to cover the pillow insert. Enjoy as an accent to your other decorative pillow throws!
