SEWING FABRIC BOOKMARKS – LEARNING TO SEW
Supplies:
– Fabric Scraps
– Fusible Fleece
– Scissors
– Fabric pencil
– Rectangle piece of paper (2.5″ x 6.5″ or whatever size bookmark you would like.)
– Iron
– Pinking Shears
– Sewing Machine
– Pins
Instructions
Step 1: I took out the fabric that I was going to use to make the fabric bookmarks.
Step 2: I cut 5 pieces of fabric in various thicknesses.
Step 3: I arranged the pieces of the scrap fabric in the order I’d like to have them sewed together. I made sure to have my rectangle template close by to make sure that my arrangement was bigger than the template.
Step 4: I ironed down ¼” of the top edge of 4 of the pieces. (I did not iron the edge of the first piece.)
Step 5: Time to sew the pieces together. I proceeded by overlapping the second piece of fabric over the bottom portion of the first piece. I sewed it ¼” from the edge. I continued doing this until all 5 pieces were attached.
Step 6: Using the rectangle template I had, I cut down the pieces of fabric I had just sewn together a little bigger than the template. I also cut out the same size out of the fabric I was going to use for the back of the fabric bookmarks.
Step 7: I cut some fusible fleece. I placed it on the back of the scrap pieces and ironed it on. (Make sure to follow the instructions that come with the fusible fleece you have purchased.)
Step 8: I placed my rectangle template over the back of my back piece of fabric. I used a fabric pencil to trace the rectangle on it.
Step 9: I placed my scrap pieces of fabric face up and placed my back piece face down. (One over the other making sure the faces were face to each other.) I pinned them together.
Step 10: I sewed the pieces together leaving a 1″to an 1.5″ gap at the bottom. (I needed the gap in order to turn the pieces inside out after sewing.)
Step 11: I used scissors to cut off the corners.
Step 12: Using pinking shears, I cut around the bookmark.
Step 13: I used a chopstick to help me turn the bookmark right side out. The chopstick helps to poke out the corners. I proceeded by using my iron, making sure to tuck in the gap at the bottom.
Step 14: Last step! Time to bring the bookmark back to the sewing machine to sew around it ¼”.
And voilà we have ourselves some bookmarks!
